Welcome back to Term 3. The International Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics and Informatics are currently being held in The Netherlands (Mathematics) and Thailand (Physics and Informatics). Not only do we have three students competing – Jinghang Luo (12), Evgeny Martynov (12) and Nancy Fu (11) but two of our ex-students are leading the teams – Graham White and Jarrah Lacko.
Congratulations to Jinghang Luo who achieved a Bronze medal at the International Physics Olympiad. This is a fabulous achievement and we are all very proud of Jinghang’s efforts.
Monday‟s School Development Day provided an opportunity for the staff to share and learn new tools of technology. Our “Happiness equals bracket” student group began their beautification of the school by painting the lower corridor of Cameron block. Our bands rehearsed all day
and we wish them all well at this weekend‟s Waverley competition.
During the recent holidays ten students (Dominique Chan, Charmaine Lo, Beatrice Zhang, Abbirami Linghanathan, Sandra Li, Vanessa Shim, Bridget Li, Richard Tong, Andre Lo and Rui Chen) accompanied by three staff (Ms Murphy, Ms Connors and Mrs Golding) travelled to Cambodia to participate in a wonderful adventure. Our time spent at the Hope for Cambodian Children‟s foundation was a highlight. The children and staff at the orphanage made us feel truly welcome and for a very short time we made a small difference in their lives. Now that we are back we are committed to doing all we can to help the HfCCF – provide support, resources and raising funds for their much needed projects. For only $2000 per year we could sponsor a child to allow them to attend university. We will be hoping our James Ruse family can help us sponsor more than one child to attain a dream that is so similar to our own students. Enquiries on how to donate can be made to Mrs Janie Golding on 98717126. Charmaine Lo of Year 11 has written an article for this newsletter to share our wonderful experiences.
On Thursday night Year 10 and their parents attended the Year 10 Information Night. Students are advised to think very carefully about their subject choices and to choose subjects where their talents lie.
Next Thursday 28th July we induct our 2011-2012 prefects into our school executive. The Prefect body is such an integral part of the James Ruse culture and spirit. A special thank you must go to Roy, Daniel, Helen and their wonderful team of prefects who have embodied James Ruse spirit while serving as wonderful role models for other students.
Also next Thursday we hold our parent teacher night for years 8, 10 and 11. Please ensure your son or daughter books an interview time with their teachers.
Next Tuesday 26th at lunchtime in the Lecture Theatre, UWS will present a lecture on medicine and scholarships – students in both Year 11 and 12 are encouraged to attend.
Our trial HSC exams commence in Week 3. It is important that our whole school community support our students through this period of time. Students are asked to be considerate near the exam rooms and offer to help Year 12 wherever possible.
We welcome Ms Julie Turk as our new Head Teacher of English. Ms Turk was previously the Head Teacher of English at Girraween High School. Ms Treskin is on leave for the next six weeks and I will be relieving as Principal. Mr Yeo will relieve in my place as Deputy and Mrs Mayers will relieve as Head Teacher Administration. For Term 3 Ms McMillan will act in the role of Head Teacher Teaching and Learning and Ms Murphy will relieve as Head Teacher Gifted and Talented Education.
Looking forward to a wonderful Term 3.
