Principal's Newsletter, Week1, Term 2, 2014

posted May 7, 2014, 3:16 AM by Ms. Connors

Welcome back to Term 2. We welcome a number of new staff members to our school this term. Mr Mark Long has taken up the position of Deputy Principal. Mr Garry Ng has joined the Mathematics Department, Ms Daisy Kong, Science and Ms Katie Twomey has returned to our Agricultural faculty. We also welcome back Ms Eve Chen after her year of maternity leave.

The April Scholar Schools for Mathematics and Informatics took place over the holidays. I am very proud to announce that four students have been invited to the Australian Olympiad teams. Congratulations to Yang Song (11) and Praveen Wijerathna (12) who will participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad and also to Ray Li (12) and Ishraq Huda (11) who will compete in the International Informatics Olympiad. We wish all four students every success as they work towards the competition.

This week two classes were surprised by Year 12 Drama’s site specific theatre which was set on the farm. This task involves the interaction of the target audience. Ms St Louis and her talented Drama class displayed their fabulous skills.

Year 11 began their first exams this week. Year 7 to 10 will also do their half-yearlies in the coming weeks. The key to a successful exam period is practice. Research has shown that the completion of practice questions is the most effective form of studying. This year the junior exams have been spread over two weeks so that students do not have to complete more than two exams each day. This allows an effective study timetable to be implemented over the next few weeks.

Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN: Students in Year 7 and Year 9 will complete their NAPLAN exams from May 13th to May 15th. Year 7 and 9 students will require a calculator. Sample tests are located at: http://www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/the-tests/the-tests.html . It is recommended that all students complete practice papers to prepare themselves.

2014 NAPLAN Writing Test: ACARA has advised that in the 2014 Writing test, students will be required to respond to either a narrative or a persuasive prompt. However, the genre of the prompt will not be disclosed prior to the test period. Information about the NAPLAN writing test, including example prompts and writing marking guides, can be found on the ACARA NAP website at:

·         www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/about-each-domain/writing/writing.html
