Principal’s Report

Congratulations to Year 9 on the completion of their first Duke of Edinburgh Hike. An enormous thank you to our teachers who also hiked and allowed Year 9 to share this wonderful experience – Mrs McKenzie, Ms Jenns, Mr Pakes, Mr Long, Ms Fernandez, Mr Wong and Mr Ng.

Our Duke of Ed team also hiked last weekend, enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Watagan Mountain range.

Another wonderful Athletics Carnival took place on Monday. Fabulous weather was a great backdrop to an amazing level of participation and sportsmanship. Thank you to our PDHPE faculty led by Sports Organiser, Mr Peter Low, for organising another superb day. The day was made even more special by the arrival of a new member of the James Ruse Family – Mr Low and Ms Palmer expanded their family as little Cooper Low arrived. Congratulations.

On Wednesday morning the SRC served over half the school with a hot chocolate before school to begin their Project Positive campaign. On Thursday students enjoyed a games lunch – with Twister, Uno, Battleship and other board games filling the staff common room. Today the SRC hosted an SRC Conference with other selective schools. This wonderful initiative promoted a sharing of ideas and the building of friendships.

The Year 8 Information Night which allows parents and students to learn about the many subjects offered in Year 9 will be held on Monday 30th May – please note this date has changed from the one previously published in the calendar.

Thank you to the many students who have volunteered to give up one day of their weekend to volunteer to collect for the Red Shield Appeal. This is a wonderful learning experience for our students and also a vital help to our community.

Many Year 10 students have also offered to complete another stage of the High Resolves Student Leadership program tomorrow at WSU Parramatta campus.

Congratulations to our Year 8 and Stage 5 language students who have participated in the World Championship Languages Competitions. Our students have answered over 450,000 questions across 15 languages. Thank you to Ms Stuart for initiating our entry into the competition and also to Ms North and Mr Pakes for supplying much encouragement.

The next Community of James Ruse Meeting will be held on Tuesday 7th June at 6.30pm in the Lecture Theatre. We have invited our ex-students who applied to overseas colleges to come back and explain the process they have gone through in applying to US and UK universities. The meeting would be suitable for both parents and students and I encourage parents of students in Years 10 and 11 that are considering overseas study after Year 12 to begin their planning with this meeting.

Korean Food Day will be held on Monday. The posters displayed around the school picture mouth-watering foods and have certainly enticed us to come along and buy in the hall on Monday recess and lunch. An enormous thank you to the 50+ parents that will be cooking all weekend and again on Monday.

Our first major band / music night will be held on Tuesday night at 6.30pm – the standard will be wonderful – please come along and support our students.

Last Tuesday night we hosted the Sydney University Year 10 Information Evening. It was a very interesting and informative event. Mothers’ Club were able to video the night if you were not able to attend. Dr Karl was certainly an entertaining speaker.
