Principal’s Report

This week sees the end of the 2016 HSC. We have had many exams in the last HSC week and our students have continued to be positive at the end of each one. Our Year 10 and Year 8 students have also completed exams and Year 7 and Year 9 will sit theirs next week. It is very important that parents praise a child’s efforts before any results come up – please do something special with your child to celebrate the end of exams.

Very soon Year 10 will complete a new excursion – The Urban Challenge. This amazing excursion will allow students to develop their social and emotional skills while adventuring around Sydney. More information can be found at http://www.theurbanchallenge.com.au/.

The Urban Challenge provides the ultimate real-world experience to over 3000 school students every year.

Small teams, each with a teacher and an Urban Challenge Guide, embark on a fast-paced unfolding adventure through Sydney and its surrounds. Teams must complete urban-flavoured activities, clue chases, meal preparation, go-discover challenges and much more along the way.

Each team member has a functional role that contributes to the running of the team (such as Photographer, Navigator, or Team Leader). Participants must work together to take actual responsibility for the own money, transport, timings and meals.

Parts of our challenge are run via our interactive website where teams are required to upload blogs and photos and check-in for their next day’s itinerary and activities. In addition to this we have a Programme Page for those at home wanting to keep track of what the teams are up to, allowing parents and caregivers the chance to participate from the lounge, or check out the daily blogs and photos as they are uploaded.

A number of Year 10 Software, Design and Development students have taken on the task of reviewing and updating our school intranet. Currently they are surveying students and teachers about current usage and needs. A parent survey will also be emailed shortly. It would be wonderful if you could take the time to complete this survey.

This week we have interviewed our Year 7 2017 students. It is always wonderful to welcome our new families to the school. I would like to thank Mrs Boey Wong and our Mothers’ Club volunteers who have helped in the Uniform Shop this week. I would also like to thank our teachers for conducting the interviews and also Mrs Haslehust-Smith and Mrs Hayes for organising the process. Our Interviews allow a very smooth transition into Year 7 for our students and families. Mr Garry Ng will be our Year 7 Year Advisor next year.

On Tuesday 15th November we will host our Combined Meeting of the CoJR and Mothers’ Club. Jocelyn Brewer will present:

Digital Nutrition: navigating 'screenagers' towards healthy tech-habits.

Technology is here to stay and is an integral part of 21st Century learning.  How can we support young people to develop healthy online habits that maximise the benefits of digital devices and avoid traps of Problematic Internet Use?  How do we address the tension between the need to use technology for learning and the inclination of young people to leisure activities?

Jocelyn Brewer is a psychologist and teacher who has been studying teens and tech for over 8 years.  She'll provide practical strategies for parenting in the digital age and answer question you might have about video games, social media and digital cultures.
