Congratulations to Dineth Fernando of 7L who has been selected to receive the Highly Commended Award for the Ministers Award for the Community Languages schools program.
On Friday our newly elected Prefects ran their first Assembly and also began 3 on 3 Soccer with a Teacher versus Student Soccer game. Congratulations to the prefects, especially Ria and Joel, for the wonderful organisation of 3 on 3 soccer that has a record number of teams contributing this year.
On Saturday our parents ran a fundraising BBQ at Carlingford Bunnings. This wonderful effort led by our CoJR Executive raised funds for our Science Lab refurbishment. Raffle tickets are also with students at present and must be returned sold ASAP. The many resources our students enjoy are funded by these initiatives – I thank you in advance for helping the CoJR meet their fundraising goals.
At our next Community of James Ruse Meeting we will host Dr Carmel Harrington. Last year Dr Harrington spoke to our staff on the importance of sleep and the sleep trends of adolescents. We found her lecture extremely valuable and felt it is very important for parents to hear. The CoJR meeting will be held next week on Tuesday 25th August at 6.30pm in the Hall.
An internationally recognised sleep expert, Dr Harrington is amazed at the seemingly little importance given to sleep. Research shows that sleep is critical to our physical and mental health and is fundamental to our ability to think and learn. Emerging research clearly shows that sleeping well is a key component to optimal performance and health and if we want to be at the top of our game we need to ensure we get the best sleep possible. Angela Lan and Connie Jiang of Year 10 have been selected to attend the digital master call run by the University of Western Sydney and Art Express.
Thank you to the many parents who were able to attend our Mothers’ Club Meeting yesterday. The amazing fundraising campaigns of Mothers’ Club are so impressive. Thank you to Mr Jason Driscoll who delivered a very informative presentation on HSC scaling and alternate entry to universities.
Please support our Mother’s Club Food Day on Tuesday next week.
Students in Year 7 and 9 received their NAPLAN results this week. We are very pleased with the results of all our students. As mentioned by Mr Adrian Piccoli, the Minister for Education, it was impressive to see our growth (improvement between Year 7 2013 and Year 9 2015) in all aspects of NAPLAN. Most impressive was our improvement in writing, reading and numeracy. Well done Year 7 and 9.
Congratulations to our year 12 music students who performed to great applause last night. Mrs Hann has done such a wonderful job of mentoring our talented students. Pictured below from left - Molly Zhang, Karen Gong, Vivian Ng, Mrs Rachel Hann, Newton Le, Justin Wu and Joann Balasuriya. We wish all our students the best of luck for their upcoming HSC performances.

ABS Australian Economics and Business Studies Competitions
James Ruse Economics and Commerce students performed exceptionally well in this year’s ABS Australian Economics and Business Studies Competitions.
All these students will be invited to attend an Awards Ceremony at the University of NSW where they will receive certificates and cash prizes. Particularly noteworthy is the achievement of the 6 year 10 students who had only completed 1 ½ years of Commerce and yet were competing against Year 11 Business Studies students.
