Principal's Newsletter, week 7, term 4, 2014

posted Nov 22, 2014, 2:03 PM by Ms. Connors
The Intermediate Concert Band have had the wonderful experience of touring to the South Coast of NSW. The band played at two primary schools and a retirement village. The warmth of the reception was overwhelming. I had the pleasure of attending the tour with Mr Adam Tomkins (Band Conductor), Mrs Cathy Elton (tour organiser) and Mr Jamie Gerlach. Our students were a credit to their school and their families.

Congratulations to Darshana Kannan (9) who has been selected for the 2015 Sydney West Regional Cricket Team. She will compete on the 16th-19th February in Armidale. We wish her a fabulous experience.

This week year 10 elected their 2015 SRC members. This is a change in procedure as we are determined to spread the range of leadership opportunities that are available to students. To ensure more students are able to achieve a leadership position, SRC members will not be able to be peer support leaders for 2015. Peer Support Leaders in 2015 will play a very important role in delivering our transition program to Year 7 students.

Congratulations to Amnesty International who ran a highly successful Multicultural Day on Monday. The wonderful array of costumes and food celebrated our diversity.

On Monday a fabulous assembly showcased the experiences of our Central Australia Immersion Tour. The excursion was a once in a lifetime experience for both the students and teachers. Working in an indigenous school for a week ensured close bonds were formed and a real difference was made in the lives of these students. We are aiming to offer this excursion again in 2015 – please encourage your children to attend.

At the assembly our transport prefects were announced for 2015. These Year 12 students are very important in ensuring the safe travel of our students. However all senior students are expected to watch over your younger students as they travel to and from school.

Year 9 High Resolves presented their presentations on Wednesday morning. As I have reported in previous newsletters this year’s projects have been spectacular. The students have clearly identified a need and they created their school action project to try to meet this need. Thank you to Ms Jen Burgess our High Resolves Coordinator and to Ms Adrienne Steele, Ms Ashlee Walker, Mr Trent Wilson and Ms Boatswain who led each class group.

Another wonderful edition of RUSE STAR under the guidance of Ms St Louis and Ms Steele has been published. This highly professional publication is a credit to the student team who produce RUSE STAR.

Thank you to Mr Jason Driscoll who assisted me run three well attended sessions on Interview preparation and training for our Year 12 students. It was wonderful to have them back at school and share our experiences with them as they prepare for many medicine, scholarship and cadetship interviews.

On Thursday morning we celebrated and thanked our many parent helpers and volunteers who ensure the successful operation of our school. Parents and volunteers assist us in so many ways – helping in the Uniform Shop, book covering, Qi Gong, sewing our blankets for Wrapt with Love, costume design and catering for the musical, presenting lectures to our students, transporting students, committees, food day volunteers and of course the members of our Mothers’ Club and Community of James Ruse. Very few schools would have the community and parent support that we are able to call upon. This helps ensure our school remains the very special school that it is.
