Welcome back to Term 2

Congratulations to Jonathan Zheng (12) and Rachel Wong (12) who have been selected to be part of the Australian team for the International Mathematics Olympiad. This year the IMO will be held in Colombia.

Congratulations also to Ray Li (11) and Ishraq Huda (10) who have been selected for the Australia Team 1 for the International Informatics Olympiad and to Joshua Lau (12) who has been selected into Australia Team 2. The International Informatics Olympiad is to be held in Brisbane this year.

Welcome back and congratulations to our Robotics Team and Mrs Pooviah who had a wonderful trip to the USA and experienced the thrill of competing at such a high level.

Our Japan excursion was another huge success. Mr Wilson, Mr Goggin and Mrs Novotni commented that everyone had a wonderful time and the students were wonderful ambassadors of our school.

In the holidays Duke of Edinburgh students working towards their Silver and Gold levels took on the challenging Jenolan to Katoomba trek. Thank you once again to Ms Jenns, Mr Pakes, Mrs McKenzie and Ms Burgess for organising and completing the hike.

Also during the holidays Ms Chen had her second child, a beautiful baby boy named Ryan. Mr Artyom Laletin will be replacing Ms Chen while she is on maternity leave.

Brendan Ma (10), Tanya Han (11), Richard Tong (11) and Kelly Wu (12) attended the YMCA NSW Youth Parliament training camp to learn about the parliamentary processes and debates, develop their committee bills and meet other like-minded students. Brendan was elected Treasurer and Kelly elected as Shadow Treasurer.

Upeka Nanayakkara (10) and Kelly Wu (12) were both finalists in the 2013 Hills Shire Youth Awards. Kelly achieved the award of first place in her division – education and training.

Eklavya Wangoo attended a three day United Nations Youth Conference, learning how to negotiate world problems including the political influence of South American drug cartels.

Many Year 12 students came in on Tuesday to complete their Senior First Aid Certificate – thank you to Ms Jenns for once again organising this service.

Changes to Parramatta Buses in the Morning:
Route 762 will now leave Parramatta at 8.14am arriving at school at 8.31am. Our issues with the Epping bus services are still unresolved. We have received acknowledgement of our various complaints and Sydney Buses are working to resolve the matter. All students have permission to travel on the M54 buses and must report any problems e.g. lateness or refusal of entry to the bus to the school front office.

We are presently in the middle of major renovations to the upper floor of Cameron Block. All classrooms and the Maths Staffroom are being repainted. The Maths Staffroom is being temporarily located in the library. On Monday and Tuesday of this week we held two highly successful School Development Days. Our focus was on the National Curriculum – we heard speakers from the Board of Studies and experts in the various syllabuses.

As the Principal position is still unfilled, I will continue to act in the role until the end of week 4 and then Ms St Louis will continue until the end of term. Hopefully this situation will be resolved this term. Mr Gerard Yeo will relieve as Deputy Principal for all of Term 2 and Mr Peter Low will relieve as Head Teacher Administration. We are so appreciative of the work Mr Warren Stanley and Ms Amy Murphy did as relieving Deputy and Head Teacher respectively last term. Ms Joy Tsai has moved into the Mathematics Department to replace Mr Alder for the rest of this year and Mrs Cheryl Isherwood is replacing Mrs Henry in Science.
