Principal's Report Week 2, Term 3 2013

posted Oct 16, 2013, 1:30 PM by Unknown user
Junior reports were distributed on Monday and I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents that all students achieve great outcomes at James Ruse. The students’ rank is not the important part of the report, but what is important is the comment and how the student is working in each subject. I would also like to remind all students and parents that extra-curricular activities are so important in creating a well-rounded student. A good student is able to communicate clearly, work well in a team, think critically and take an initiative. Universities and employers are always looking for that person who can think quickly and make good decisions.

Sarah Tan was selected by Table Tennis Australia to participate in the 2013 National Junior (under 18 girls Singles) top 10 ranking Tournament in Croydon, Victoria from June 29 to June 30 this year. She has been ranked number 2, with 8 wins and 1 loss.  Sarah represented NSW in the Youth (under 21) Women’s team to compete in the 2013 Australian National Table tennis competition in Sydney from July 7th to 13th. Sarah received a gold medal in the under 21 Women’s team and a bronze medal in the under 21 Women’s doubles. Congratulations Sarah!

Congratulations to Daniel Selvadurai (Yr 7) who was awarded First Place in the Zone round of the Legacy Public Speaking Competition. Daniel will now compete in the Regional Finals. In the holidays three James Ruse students attended the International Informatics Olympiad which was held in Brisbane this year - Ray Li (11), Ishraq Huda (10) and Joshua Lau (12). Ray achieved a Silver medal and Ishraq a Bronze Medal. Joshua added an unofficial Bronze to the Bronze he also achieved at last year's IIO. Congratulations to these students and ex-student Jarrah Lacko who led the Australian team this year.

Julia Li of Year 9 plays netball for Ryde Eastwood club and recently her team became number 1 in NSW. Julia is in the under 14's team and played her competition over three days. Julia played 21 games and her team won 20 of these games. Congratulations to Julia.

I would like to remind parents that if your son or daughter is away from school we would like an absence note as soon as possible on their return – no later than two weeks. If your son or daughter arrives after 8:50am then it is considered a partial absence.

I also would like to remind all students and parents that excursions are a rich and important part of James Ruse. We expect all students to attend all excursions and incursions and ask that the permission letter and payment is received by the school at least one week before the excursion occurs. If there is ever a concern re: paying an excursion please discuss issues with either myself or the Deputy Principals.

On Wednesday 31 July we will be having our Curriculum Committee meeting at 8am in the Conference Room. Recently the team has surveyed the whole student body in relation to their thoughts on subject choices and elective subjects including the languages that we could offer. Please come along if you are interested.
