The HSC has begun well; many students have now completed three exams. It is wonderful to see many parents waiting at the gate to ensure students are going ok. It is a time when they need all our support and a little spoiling from their family.

Year 8 presented their products for the Big IQ this week. The topics ranged across all subjects and the products were in the form of videos, websites or PowerPoint presentations. Many of the groups displayed wonderful collaboration and communication skills. Congratulations to all students who worked very hard to ensure a successful presentation.

The Sydney Hills Youth Awards (previously known as The Excellence in Youth Awards) is now calling for nominations. There are 6 categories including The Youth Ambassador. Students must live in The Hills Shire LGA to be eligible to enter. Applications open on Friday 19 October 2012 at 4pm and the link is

International Software Schools' Competition – Joshua Lau (11), Ray Li (10) and Ishraq Huda (9) have been selected to represent Australia next week at the International Software School’s Competition in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Jarrah Lacko, an ex-student, is the team leader and mentor. We wish them all well.

New Syllabuses: Education Minister Adrian Piccoli launched the new English, Mathematics, History and Science syllabuses for students from Kindergarten to Year 10, giving teachers online access to syllabuses including Australian curriculum content, anywhere, any time, on a variety of devices in three clicks or less. The Minister also announced that the Government has provided an additional $25 million in funding over the next two years to specifically support NSW schools to introduce the new syllabuses.

“And following advice from the Board of Studies, and agreed by the Department of Education and Communities an additional School Development Day will be provided for all teachers in NSW Government schools on Tuesday April 30. This follows a School Development Day that is already scheduled for the beginning of Term 2 on Monday April 29.”

Implementation for the new syllabuses will be 2014 for Years 7 and 9.

Pole Vaulting Champion does it again: This weekend Mudith Jayasekara competed at the 2012 NSW All Schools Athletics Championships and received a Gold Medal in the 16 Years Boys Pole Vault. Mudith jumped 4.20m and has qualified for the 2012 Australian All Schools Championships in Tasmania to be held from the 30th November to the 2nd December. We wish him all the best.

Next week Mrs Golding, our School Administration Manager, and I will attend our session on the new finance module LMBR. We will be told our Resource Allocation Model which is our funding for 2013.

Late last week, Cheryl Parker’s daughter, Michelle passed away. Mrs Parker, who is our much loved receptionist, has expressed her gratitude for the support the school community continues to show her family. Many students and parents were involved in assisting the school raise funds to send Michelle and her family to Disneyland last year. We send Mrs Parker’s family our deepest condolences.
