Congratulations to Linus Cooper (7), Simon Yang (9),  Kevin Xian (9), Yang Song (10) and Praveen Wijerathna (10) who have been invited to attend the Mathematics Olympiad Scholar School.

On Tuesday night, I attended the Annual General Meeting of the CoJR. I wish to extend the school’s gratitude to all parents who serve on the CoJR and Mothers’ Club. We offer our sincere thanks to Patricia Xu who resigned from her role as President. Patricia has made a wonderful contribution to our school; her email communication system and persistent fundraising efforts have made the school a much better place. I would also like to thank the other outgoing executives and welcome the new executive team:
  • President: Para Parameshwaran
  • Vice Presidents: Kane Ragavan and Patricia Xu
  • Treasurer: Wen Wen
  • Secretary: Constantine Lawrence
On Monday of this week our Korean parents hosted the Korean Food Day for 2013. Although very hot and unpleasant weather, our parents worked tirelessly to produce beautiful food for the students and staff. These fundraising events are a wonderful social occasion as well as very valuable to ensuring the facilities of the school continue to get upgraded. At present we are saving to refurbish our science laboratories. We are so appreciative of the parents that were able to come and help on the day. Students realise how important they are to their parents and how they are willing to give up work and time for their school. It is also a wonderful example of community service for the students to see.

Last weekend I took the time to sit down and read the 2012 Yearbook. This publication is a wonderful record of the happenings in our school over the year. The articles were informative and the photographs and pictures enticing. The yearbook would never happen without the dedication and commitment of Mr Ian Goggin and Ms Joanne McMillan. I would like to publically acknowledge their effort, talent and creativity in producing such a wonderful “collection of memories” for all of us. Thank you to both Ian and Joanne for such fabulous work.

Recently I sent an email to all students, as we often do, inviting them to participate in a competition named “Shout Out”. The task was to produce a 30 second video depicting change that is necessary in education. Winnie Wang, Tharsini Urutherakumar and Liz Tang of Year 10, teamed up to produce this video, submitted it and are now finalists in the competition. These fantastic students have shown great initiative and talent and will now attend a master class and event at the Sydney Opera House. Congratulations to Winnie, Tharsini and Liz. Well done.

Next week we will meet with an architect to begin drawing up plans for our Multiple Learning Space (Gymnasium). This is an exciting first step to begin the building process after such a long journey of successful fundraising.

Our plans for the refurbishment of our science laboratories are also underway. We have contracted an architect to draw plans for C0.1, C1.1 and C1.2 and hope to have these over the next few weeks. We then hope to begin building the first lab (C0.1) with combined funding from the school and CoJR. We have applied for joint funding grants for the refurbishment of our other labs and will hopefully find out in November if we have been successful.

Advertisement for Uniform Shop Supervisor: We are seeking a new Uniform Shop Supervisor. The successful applicant will be responsible for running the uniform shop; purchasing supplies, liaising with parent volunteers and selling our uniform to parents and students. Basic accounting skills would be advantageous, however, training will be provided. We are looking for a friendly, approachable and organised person that understands the culture of our school community. The hours of the uniform shop supervisor are 8am – 2pm on Tuesday and Wednesday each school week. The uniform shop is also open for orientation days and interview days. The successful applicant will be offered a temporary contract. If you are interested in finding out more about this position or would like to see the role statement, please contact Mrs Leanne Ryan by email
Applications for the Uniform Shop Supervisor are due to Mrs Ryan by Monday 28th October, 2013. A short CV outlining suitable experiences and skills and including two referees are welcome.

Over the next few weeks our accounts department will get ready for the implementation of our new finance software – SAP. This will involve some disruption to the service we can offer. We will complete “rollover” (our end of year) on November 6th and the accounts office will be virtually closed for the changeover process until November 15th. If you have outstanding accounts to be paid it would be very convenient if you could do so before October 28th or after November 15th.

As we move into junior exam week, please monitor your child’s study patterns. A good night’s sleep is the most effective tool of exam success.
