Principal's Report Week 6, Term 4 2012

posted Dec 4, 2012, 4:13 PM by Unknown user
My retirement I have informed our school community this Thursday and Friday that, after six years at this most magical school, I am retiring. My last day at school will be 21 December. Leading James Ruse AHS has been an inspiring, humbling and enchanting experience. I look back and there are so many memories. Every day is a joy to work with our students, our staff and our parents. As I look forward, I am confident that the school has such strong foundations and programs that the next principal will continue to take the school into an exciting decade. Ms St Louis will relieve as principal for the first half of Term 1 2013, and Ms Connors for the second part of Term 1, before the new principal is appointed.

Year 9 High Resolves On Monday I watched our Year 9 students do their class presentations on their student wellbeing school projects. They demonstrated deep understanding of leadership, team work, decision making. They were able to reflect on their challenges. They presented with heart, showing their commitment to justice and hope for the future. Thank you to the teachers who led them - Ms Murphy, Ms Connors, Ms Webb, Ms Burgess and Ms Mason.

Australian Mathematics Trust Medals Presentation Ms Connors had the honour of attending the Australian Mathematics Trust Medals
Presentation, last Friday, at Government House in Melbourne. With four James Ruse medal winners, we were the only school to have multiple awardees. Victor Khou, year 12, Praveen Wijerathna, year 9, Tina Lin, year 8 and Simon ang, year 8 are to be congratulated once again on this incredible achievement. Pictured (at left) is Victor Khou, receiving his last medal in James Ruse uniform as he now moves on to his university studies.

EdX Please have a look at the free online courses, at this stage run by MIT, Harvard, Berkeley and Texas in Chemistry, Electronics, Computer Science, Software, Graphics and Artificial Intelligence. Students range in age from 14 to 74. Google EdX. I think this is just the start and we will see an explosion of such 10 to 12 week courses (requiring about 12 hours a week). I expect there will be a number of you, especially in years 9, 10 and 11, who will sign up. You sit for exams where you are judged to be competent or not ie no grades. Parents may be interested as well. There are more details at the end of this newsletter.

Street parking We have had a new police officer, Cst Houlford, nominated to support our school. He has seven schools in total. He will be coming around and checking that cars are not parked over driveways, or illegally parked, around our school – and fining miscreants. Please take this warning seriously.

Year 12 Formal This was a magnificent event on Monday night in the Star Room at the IMAX in Darling Harbour. Our students certainly looked ready to make their mark on the world. Thank you to Mr Perrins and Ms Briggs for helping to make the night such a success. Year 12 have presented staff with a vacuum mug; they will fund the new garden furniture on the front lawn in the new chess rose garden being planned.

Informatics Scholar School Seven students have been invited to attend the Informatics Scholar School in  December. This represents a significant proportion of all invitees. Special thanks must go to Kenneth Wong
and Evgeny Martynov, our ex-students, who have diligently trained and supported the students. Congratulations go to Ray Li (10), Mohammad Ishraq Huda (9), Daaron Chiu (10), Kevin Shi (10), Saimarooban Muralidaran (10) Sanchit Gupta (7) and Joshua Lau (11). We wish them success as they compete for a place in the Australia Informatics Team. In 2013, the International Informatics Olympiad will be held
in Brisbane.
