Principal's Report Week 8, Term 3 2012

On Monday I attended the 2012 Presentation Ceremony of the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement. This wonderful ceremony acknowledged the talents, dedication and successes of thirty four students from all over NSW. Sharon Mo was a very worthy recipient of this award. Sharon was acknowledged for her wonderful work in student leadership (her role as SRC President and School Captain),
her work in social justice (leading the Cranes for Hope Project) and her ability to balance all her activities and achieve exceptional academic success.

At UNSW on Saturday our students, Joshua Lau (11), Ray Li (10) and Ishraq Huda (9), competed in the UNSW Progcomp final. After intense competition from highly competitive opposition from Emmanuel and North Sydney Boys, the boys were able to win in the last two minutes of the competition. Success in this competition is not just about programming talent (although important), it is all about time management,
communication and team work. Of all the successful teams I have supervised over the last seven years, this team was the most effective as a group. Special thanks to Evgeny Martynov and Kenneth Wong (ex-students) who still come back every Monday afternoon to tutor younger students and to train our teams. Yesterday 10 students from Year 7 - 11 competed in the Australian Informatics Olympiad. From this
qualifying exam will come the invitations to the December Scholar School. Joshua Lau leaves at the end of next week to join the Australian Informatics team for a training camp before flying to Italy to compete in the International Informatics Olympiad. We wish him all the best.

Year 11 exams are progressing well. 9C decided that Year 11 needed a little cheer to keep their spirits up this week and decided to shower them with little surprises. Jessica Zeng, School Captain, sent the following email which also included quotes from many other year 11 students:

“Dear fabulous 9C and Ms Murphy!
On behalf of all of the tired and stressed out Year 11s, we would love to say a HUGE thank you for being caring, loving and an absolutely AMAZING bunch of guardian angels!! Thank you so much for thinking of us, and for going out of your way to brighten up our week :) We seriously loved our letters, I don't think that many people have come out of an English exam smiling before (sorry Ms Murphy...)!…”
Thank you 9C for your thoughtfulness.

Year 12 are working hard to consolidate their knowledge by revising and completing many practice papers. Small groups of students have formed to help each other in many subjects. The key to success is collaboration. Year 12 received a letter outlining the next weeks of activities that lead up to the HSC. It is very important that they attend all lessons every day and work with their teachers to achieve their goals. In
my recent calculation of ATAR estimates it was very pleasing to see the improvement they have achieved since May and that they are on track for a successful HSC.

Year 8 enjoyed their Resourceful Adolescent Program and camp this week. A huge thank you to their Year Advisor, Mr Trent Wilson for organising and coordinating the camp. Thank you also to Ms St Louis, Ms Chen, Mrs McKenzie, Mr Driscoll, Mr Goggin, Ms Hameed, Ms Webb and Ms Brooks for giving up their own time to ensure the success of our wellbeing program and support Year 8.

Please support JRAHS’s Interact Exodus food and amenities drives. Points will be awarded for each item brought in and a class pizza party is the reward for the successful class. Please see Elizabeth’s article inside this newsletter.

Since 2006, Graham White, ex-student, has been a wonderful support of our mathematics extension programs. Graham has taught his Olympiad training course for the last five and one half years. After completing double degrees with honours at Sydney University, Graham is moving to the United States to begin his PhD in Math (as the Americans will call it) at Stanford University. We thank him for his wonderful
contribution to the school and wish him all the best in the next stage of his career.

We have a huge week coming up at JRAHS:
