Principal's Report Week 8, Term 4 2012

Appointments and retirements Following Mr Ian Woodhouse’s retirement, our new Head Teacher Mathematics has been appointed. We welcome Ms Heather Weber, who is currently HT Maths at Kellyville HS. Ms Weber is also the President of the Mathematical Association of NSW. Mr Deigan is retiring formally at the end of 2013, but he is taking leave for next year. His role will be taken by Mr Jason Driscoll,
who relieved for him earlier, until the position is formally vacant.

Next few weeks Year 11 finished their assessments this week. There are now numerous programs at school in the next few weeks that rely on everyone’s commitment and support. They are all important.

Firstly, there are the music concerts. Performers need an audience. Our audience is made up of parents and fellow students. It is very sad when students are dropped off to perform and then picked up again after the performance. It is very sad when friends do not come along and support their peers. The end of the year is a time to celebrate achievements. Please come along and celebrate with us.

Thursday 6 December: End of year Performers Concert in the hall
Sunday 9 December: Toni Powell and Friends – a performance to raise funds for multiple sclerosis –
3 pm in the hall - $20
Monday 10 December: Combined agricultural HS’s concert – James Ruse and Hurlstone, joined by
Eastwood Primary – in the hall at 7pm

Secondly, we have our Presentation Day on Tuesday 4 December. The parents of award recipients have all received invitations. It will be a wonderful occasion to celebrate student achievements.

Thirdly, there are numerous events on at school where, as usual, we expect full participation. There is a years 9/10 elective French excursion. We have the canteen helpers’ picnic. Year 7 are continuing their beach safety program. We have Orientation Day for Year 6 into 7 with many student helpers. The prefects are running Christmas activities and there is an optional Carol Service. There is a Social Justice planning day
with Girraween HS and North Sydney GHS for next year. Cloud 9 has organised R U OK Day. The Year 10 Formal is on 7 December. We are running cyber bullying seminars with the police for the junior school. Year 10 are watching the Year 10 Drama production. Cadets leave for their camp on 12 December; reports are handed out on 18 December. At the same time, as usual, normal lessons continue! As usual we expect missed work to be completed and learning to be up to date.

No Hotmail accounts please Hotmail is continuing not to allow departmental emails to be received. It seems there are still issues to be resolved. Many parents and students on committees have given us Hotmail addresses for communication and the emails are bouncing. If you have a Hotmail account please change it and give the school a new one. Students should only use the DET account.
Parent Helpers’ Assembly and Breakfast We were able to thank, and give certificates to the very many parents who joined us for breakfast on Wednesday. We can only do what we do because of parent support. It is a vital partnership.

SRC evaluation SRC spent time evaluating all of their programs this week. They will share the results with the whole school.

Peer Support Camp I joined the Year 10 students at their Peer Support training this Thursday and Friday at Collaroy. I enjoy working with the groups. They all show deep leadership skill development. It was good to have the new students present as well – they are integrating very well already.

Year 9 Performances at Carlingford West PS On Friday Ms Mason took the Year 9 Drama classes down to Carlingford West PS as part of their Theatre in Education Performances. Students used children’s theatre conventions to present on the importance of sleep, of hygiene and of the importance of being humble. They were very well received.

Regional Excellence in Education Awards 2012 On Tuesday afternoon I had the pleasure of witnessing Mrs Sheila Pooviah receive her Certificate of 40 Years Service - one of six teachers! This is a remarkable achievement - 40 years service to public schools in NSW. Mrs Pooviah was congratulated at assembly on Wednesday.
